If you’ve started researching ISTA testing for your packaging, you’ve probably noticed that most guides cover the entire ISTA system at once — Series 1 through 7, a dozen sub-tests, and a wall of acronyms. That’s useful for getting the big picture, but it doesn’t answer the question a lot of shippers actually have: what specifically is ISTA 1A, and is it the right test for my product?
This post focuses on that one test.
What ISTA 1A Is
ISTA 1A is one of the procedures within ISTA’s Series 1 — the Non-Simulation Integrity Performance Tests. “Non-simulation” is the key word: unlike Series 2 or Series 3 tests, ISTA 1A doesn’t attempt to recreate a specific shipping route or distribution environment. Instead, it applies a fixed, general set of stresses — primarily drops and, depending on the package weight, compression — to evaluate the basic structural integrity of a packaged product.
ISTA 1A is specifically designed for individual packaged products weighing 150 lb (68 kg) or less, shipped as single units rather than as part of a unitized or palletized load.
In practice, the procedure typically includes:
- Atmospheric preconditioning and conditioning, exposing the package to controlled temperature and humidity before testing begins
- A drop test sequence, with the package dropped from specified heights and orientations to assess how well it protects its contents from handling impacts
- Compression testing, where applicable, to simulate stacking pressure during storage and transit
Because it’s a baseline, non-simulation test, ISTA 1A is generally less rigorous — and less expensive — than the general simulation tests in Series 2 or 3. That makes it a common starting point for packaging validation, especially for products that aren’t headed into highly specialized distribution channels.
Who Actually Needs ISTA 1A
ISTA 1A tends to make sense for:
- Manufacturers establishing a packaging baseline before investing in more expensive simulation testing
- Products shipped via standard parcel or small-package carriers, where a general integrity check is sufficient
- Retailers and vendors who require ISTA 1-Series testing as a minimum packaging qualification standard
- Companies comparing two or more packaging designs and looking for a consistent, repeatable way to evaluate which one holds up better
If your product moves through a more demanding or specific distribution path — Amazon’s fulfillment network, less-than-truckload freight, or international air shipment — a Series 2, 3, or 6 test is usually the better fit, since those simulate the actual hazards of that specific route rather than applying a general stress profile.
How ISTA 1A Differs From 1B and 3A
It’s easy to confuse ISTA 1A with its closest relatives, so here’s the short version:
- ISTA 1A vs. ISTA 1B: Both sit within the non-simulation Series 1 family. ISTA 1B is oriented toward compression testing specifically, while 1A combines drop testing with conditioning and, where applicable, compression — giving 1A a broader integrity check overall.
- ISTA 1A vs. ISTA 3A: This is the comparison we hear most often. ISTA 3A is a general simulation performance test built specifically for parcel-delivery-system shipments — it more closely mirrors the actual handling, vibration, and shock conditions of a small-package carrier route. ISTA 1A is the simpler, non-simulation baseline. Many companies start with 1A and graduate to 3A once packaging is more finalized, or run 3A directly if their product is already locked into a parcel delivery channel.

What to Prepare Before Submitting an ISTA 1A Sample
Before sending samples to a lab for ISTA 1A testing, it helps to have:
- The actual product and packaging as it will ship — substitutes should match the weight and density of the real product
- A clear definition, ahead of time, of what counts as “damage” and what level of product or package condition is acceptable at test’s end
- At least one sample, though ISTA recommends testing multiple samples where possible for a more reliable result

Getting ISTA 1A Testing Done Right
ISTA 1A is often the right first step in validating a new package design — but it’s only useful if it’s run consistently, with proper conditioning and documented pass/fail criteria.
